Guide
How to Send Serial Numbers, Barcodes and QR Codes for Metal Nameplates
When every plate carries its own number or code, the data matters as much as the artwork. A clean data file and one marked example let us produce the batch without guesswork. This guide covers what to send and how the data is checked.
1. Keep the plate drawing and the data separate
Send the plate outline, dimensions, hole positions and logo artwork as one file, and the variable data as a separate list. Mixing them in one document is the most common cause of questions.
2. Choose the code type
| Data | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Serial numbers | A unique number for each unit |
| Barcodes | Scanning into inventory or production systems |
| QR codes | Linking to a web page or a record |
| Data Matrix | Compact codes on small plates |
3. Send the data in a clean format
- One row per plate, in the order you want them marked
- Fixed text such as model or rating kept separate from the changing values
- For sequences, the first and last number and any prefix or leading zeros
- For barcodes, the symbology your scanner reads
- For QR codes, the exact content or URL for each code
4. Show one marked example
Send a mock-up of one finished plate showing where each value sits, the text size and how the codes line up with the rest of the layout.
5. Pick the marking process with the material
Our marking processes include etching, embossing, anodizing, laser marking and screen printing, on aluminum, stainless steel and brass. Tell us where the plate will be fitted and what it is exposed to, and we review the material and marking for that environment.
6. Check a representative marked sample
Before the batch, check a representative marked sample: the numbers, how the codes read with your own scanner, size, color and mounting. A sample takes 7–10 days; production takes 15–20 days after sample approval.
